THREE WEEK OMAGH BOMB HEARING ENDS WITH JUDGEMENT RESERVED
Three week Omagh bomb hearing ends with judgement reserved
A THREE week appeal hearing by four republicans successfully sued by some of those bereaved in the Omagh bomb has ended for now with judgement being reserved.
Lord Justice Higgins, sitting with Lord Justices Girvan and Coghlin. reserved judgement in the case at the Court of Appeal in Belfast this week.
The four men found liable for the bombing in the landmark ruling of June 2009 were Michael McKevitt, Liam Campbell, Colm Murphy and Seamus Daly
Lord Justice Higgins said that a verdict would be delivered once they had gone through all the material related to the case in detail.
"I suspect both my colleagues, like myself, had little understanding as to the extent of the paperwork and the issues in this case." he said.
The appeal has given rise to a considerable number of issues which we will require to consider and reflect upon. Then we will give our judgement."
The legal team representing the twelve relatives of some of those killed in the August 1998 atrocity have also appealed the level of compensation awarded to them
They were awarded �1.6 million and are arguing that they should receive more because of the scale of the bomb.
After the final submissions were delivered, senior counsel for Liam Campbell. Brian Fee QC. speaking on behalf of all the lawyers involved, expressed thanks to the judges for how they had handled the case. He said it was appropriate to mark their gratitude during a long, protracted and difficult case such as this.
