ALL ATROCITIES ARE REPREHENSIBLE
All atrocities are reprehensible
FURTHER to recent correspondence it is important to understand that an atrocity is an atrocity and each one was equally as reprehensible as the other.
Russ Fleming (see Ulster Herald, Thursday, June 24) was quite correct to highlight the bombing of Enniskillen and Omagh as two of the worst episodes in the history of the troubles in Ireland. There were countless other shameful outrages which will never be forgotten.
Victims of an atrocity all suffer to the same degree.
Derry was different because it was carried out by the crown forces who were supposed to be protecting the citizens of the country.
The British Embassy in Dublin was burned to the ground and there was a national day of mourning for the victims who were shot. Normal people were enraged by the treachery of the Widgery Report whose ham-fisted efforts at a cover up acted as a recruiting campaign for the Provisional IRA.
What kind of idiots or morons did they take us for? There followed 30-odd years of barely controlled civil war. We now have peace, but peace is like a tender flower which needs constant nurturing. Let no Irishman lift a hand in anger against any other Irishman.
If there was any redeeming factor in all of this perhaps it was the reaction of Prime Minister, David Cameron in the House of Commons. His words were greeted with widespread approval and frequent rounds of applause from the families of the victims. The families of all the victims have shown great dignity and compassion.
John F Kennedy said the greatest endeavour that mankind can be involved in is the work of peace.
