FAMILY members from the Omagh Support and Self Help Group attended a special reception hosted by President McAleese in Aras an Uachtarain yesterday (Wednesday). The group of 45 bereaved or affected by the Omagh Bomb in 1998, spent two hours at the residence. Their trip included a tour of the historic building.
Speaking to the Ulstcr Herald, Michael Gallagher, said the visit was a positive start to the year following a number of important events in 2009.
"The invitation was issued to us following representation to the President by people who felt that it would be an appropriate way of acknowledging the work of the group," he said.
"It is also ten years since the group was established and comes after the successful outcome of the Civil Case.
"Each member of the group which included some from Buncrana were personally introduced to President McAleese. It was good that the group has been acknowledged in this manner.
"This was a great honour and privilege to have been invited and we were delighted when the word came through that we were going to be honoured with a visit."
Many of the group were on their first visit to Aras an Uachtarain and, as well as going on a tour, were also treated to refreshments.
