Preliminary report today on Omagh police probe
A REVIEW of the police's handling of the Omagh bomb case is being led by the man who investigated Special Branch's role in the aftermath of the atrocity.
Sir Dan Crompton will deliver an interim verbal report to the Policing Board today (Thursday), with a final written report by the end of May.
The review follows the acquittal in December of south Armagh man Sean Hoey. The judge was scathing about police evidence, saying there was "deliberate and calculated deception".
Sir Dan is a former head of Britain's Inspectorate of Constabulary, the role now filled by ex-RUC chief Sir Ronnie Flanagan.
Also this week, the judge of the Omagh bomb compensation case rejected a bid to have the trial adjourned. With the civil action due to begin at the High Court in Belfast next week, Mr Justice Morgan also dismissed an application for a ban on media coverage.
