DESIGNS FOR OMAGH BOMB MEMORIAL TO GO ON PUBLIC DISPLAY
Designs for Omagh bomb memorial to go on public display
DESIGN proposals for the new memorial to the Omagh Bombing victims have to be submitted by the end of this week. Those who have been shortlisted for this second stage of the process to put in place a fitting memorial before the 10th anniversary of the atrocity on August 15, 2008, will present details their ideas which will then be put on public display in the town.
The Omagh Memorial Working Group is keen to hear the views of those most affected by the bomb, so it has decided to put the final design proposals on public display in the new Strule Arts Centre and on the Omagh District Council website (www.omagh.gov.uk) from Thursday, July 5, until Friday, July 27.
Comments on the proposals can be submitted by the public during this period. A private opportunity to view the design proposals will also be provided for all of those bereaved and injured by the bomb.
Following the public exhibition, the design teams will present their proposals to the panel of assessors who will then be tasked with selecting the most appropriate memorial design. The panel's decision will be made on the basis of pre-established criteria including the extent to which the proposal integrates the bomb site and the memorial garden as well as the overall artistic quality of the proposal. The panel will also give consideration to the potential of the proposal to promote healing and reflection and to make an impact with members of the public.
The assessment panel's recommendation will then be considered by the Omagh Memorial Working Group who will also consider options for an appropriate inscription, following which a report will be presented to Omagh District Council for approval.
Omagh Memorial Working Group again wishes to emphasise that, at this stage, no form of words for the inscription has either been agreed or rejected. It encourages everyone to be open-minded, inclusive and constructive in relation to the memorial will should be valued and cherished by the whole community.
It is expected that the successful design will be commissioned in September following which work will commence to obtain the various statutory approvals before construction begins on site.
