Members keen to see work move forward
THE Policing Board's Community Involvement Committee received a comprehensive briefing from Assistant Chief Constable Sam Kinkaid on the ongoing work of Crime Operations Department, including the Omagh bomb investigation, at the May 19 meeting in Belfast.
Board vice-chairman and chairman of the committee, Denis Bradley, said members were provided with an overview of the challenges in Omagh case.
"The Policing Board recognises the significant work progressed by the PSNI on this case and the challenges of moving forward what has been a difficult police investigation.
"The lessons learnt from Omagh and the recommendations of the Blakey, Crompton and Stevens reports underpin the establishment of Crime Operations Department and ensure that PSNI processes and procedures in this area now form best policing practice within these islands".
ACC Kinkaid also provided the Committee with an overview of the working of the new unit established to deal with historic cases and updated members on progress with recruiting staff to review cases.
Mr Bradley said, "This is an area where the Board has taken a close interest and we want to make sure that work in this area is moved forward as quickly as possible. We are well aware of community interest and concerns about dealing with past cases and we will be seeking regular updates from the police on progress."
