If you haven't suffered directly as the result of the Omagh bomb it is all too easy to forget the way in which that horrific and evil event robbed so many families of their loved ones and destroyed or marred the lives of so many more.
It was such a huge event at the time that ordinary people assumed that those behind the atrocity must surely be caught and brought to justice. But six and a half years after the atrocity, not one person has ever been charged with murder at Omagh in August 15, 1998 - why? As the families bereaved and traumatised by the blast seek justice, this, more than any other question has troubled them.
From early in the investigation, and following Mrs O'Loan's disclosures about the case - it was apparent that Omagh had found all of the twilight intelligence agencies of the government in the Republic and the clandestine intelligence agencies of the British government so deeply enmeshed in the affair that it would be too dangerous to ever allow the truth to come out. Everyone knows that that the Real-IRA did the deed. They made and planted the bomb. But the Irish intelligence agencies and the Gardai allowed the bomb to travel to Omagh, and the Omagh police, CID, British intelligence, and the British Army all knew that an attack was planned for Omagh - once again the question emerges why? We can only guess at the reasons. What we need no longer guess at is the scope of 'covert and black operations' nor need we guess at the extent to which the 'spooks' will go, to confound democracy and accountability. There are many organisations whose hands, after this affair, drip with the blood of our citizens who were blown to bits on that sad and horrible day.
Nor should the mass murderers of the Real IRA be let off the hook. They knew what they were doing, they knew there was a carnival planned for Omagh, they knew what a bomb would do to anyone caught in its path but they persisted with their anti-peace process madness.
They must be hunted down and brought before the courts. There is no honour in protecting these people, and whilst the police and intelligence forces, in both jurisdictions, have undoubtedly been compromised - these monsters must not be allowed to get away in the smoke.
The Omagh families must have justice -no matter what organisation, government, or ideology that offends.
