GARDAI REFUSE BOMB DNA SAMPLES
Gardai refuse bomb DNA samples
THE Gardai's refusal to hand over important DNA evidence to PSNI officers investigating the bombing of Omagh could get political, with suggestions this week that direct rule Minister of Security, Ian Pearson could get involved in the row.
At a recent meeting of the Policing Board, Assistant Chief Constable Sam Kincaid said that 13 months after the request had first been made for the DNA samples they had not met with a positive response.
He said the samples were needed to see if they matched traces of DNA detected during the inquiry into the massacre in Omagh.
It is thought that Mr Pearson will now try to persuade Taoiseach Bertie Ahern to give the go ahead for the handing over of the samples.
