Warrington choir visit Omagh
Beruit hostage Terry Waite acts as compere
OVER 300 people turned out for the recent concert in Omagh featuring Warrington Male Voice Choir.
The event also included a guest appearance by the former Beirut hostage, Terry Waite who was compere.
The Leisure Centre was the venue for this musical extravaganza with the 85 strong choir raising the roof with their fine singing which delighted the audience.
The special Christmas concert was aimed at showing support for the people of Omagh. The choir is celebrating its centenary this year and were booked to play in the Waterfront Hall in Belfast on the Saturday night. They decided to extend their trip to the North and perform in Omagh the following Sunday.
Accompanying the choir to Omagh were leading officials from Warrington, including the Mayor, Albert Clemow and his wife, the deputy Mayor and wife and the MP for Warrington South, Helen Southwork.
Mrs Waite accompanied husband Terry, and also included were Colin Parry and his wife, Wendy who lost a son in the Warrington bombing.
The group, Women Together for Peace, got the concert under way with the lighting of the candle which was presented to the town of Warrington.
The lighting of the candle was done by Margaret Geelan, of Woman Together and Pat Campbell, honorary life vice-president, and the Mayor of Warrington.
The women encouraged people to light a candle this Christmas in memory of those killed and as a mark of respect and to show empathy for the
families who had someone missing from their homes this year.
The members of Omagh Community Youth Choir joined in the concert and sang their recording of Across the Bridge of Hope.
Omagh Council Chairman, Sean Clarke said he was delighted to see so many people from Warrington taking part in the event, and welcomed them to Omagh. He thanked the choir for including Omagh in their "busy schedule'.
"We are very grateful to them for sharing through their music their empathy with the people of our town. In what is traditionally a time of joy and goodwill, Christmas in Omagh will this year be a time of mixed emotions and reflection. Today's event will help in its own way with the healing process" he said.
To mark the visit, a presentation was made to the Mayor of Warrington, who accepted it on behalf of Warrington Borough Council.
Presentation were also made to the chairman of the male voice choir, Barry Johnston and a token of appreciation to Terry Waite.
