LORD MAYORS OF DUBLIN AND BELFAST VISIT OMAGH
Lord Mayors of Dublin and Belfast visit Omagh
The Lord Mayors of Dublin and Belfast were welcomed to Omagh this week when they both paid a visit to the town on Sunday.
Omagh Council Chairman Sean Clarke hosted a civic reception this week to welcome Dublin Boys Singers ' and civic dignitaries to the town. Also present were guests from Belfast, Enniskillen and Donegal.
"It gives me great pleasure, as Chairman of Omagh District Council, to extend a warm welcome to you all to Omagh Leisure Centre this afternoon. I would like particularly to welcome the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Senator Joe Doyle and his colleagues from Dublin Corporation who have joined us for this afternoon's concert," said Councillor Clarke.
"We are delighted that the Dublin Boy Singers have been able to fit Omagh into what is I know a very busy schedule and we welcome their support. Welcome also to St. Michael's Brass Band from Enniskillen and the Convoy Accordion Band from Co. Donegal who have so generously given of their time to entertain us this afternoon.
"I am looking forward very much to this afternoon's concert which I understand will have a seasonal feel to it. In what is traditionally a time of joy and goodwill, Christmas in Omagh will this year be a time of mixed emotions and reflection. Today's event will help in its own way with the healing colleagues for coming to Omagh today and in doing so, you are expressing the support of the people of Dublin. I would ask you to convey seasons greetings to the people of Dublin from the people of Omagh and to thank them for their support at this time," he said. To mark his visit to Omagh, Senator Doyle was presented with a framed picture of a local scene on behalf of Dublin Corporation.
Councillor Clarke also welcomed Belfast Lord Mayor, David Alderdice, saying "On behalf of the people of Omagh, I would like to thank the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor David Alderdice and the Chief Executive of Belfast City Council, Brian Hanna for coming here today on behalf of the people of Belfast to show solidarity with the people of Omagh. Lord Mayor, please convey out heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to the people of your city for their many messages of support and prayers included in the Books of Condolence. I would also ask that you take with you our sincere good wishes for a happy and peaceful Christmas," he added.
