Canadian benefactor presents �5,000 to Red Cross
THE RED CROSS in Omagh which was involved in the emergency response in the aftermath of the August 15th bomb has been rewarded five thousand times over by a Canadian benefactor.
Gerard Curran, owner of the James Joyce Irish Pub in Calgary, Canada in deciding he wanted the help the Red Cross in Omagh organised a fund raising venture which raised the magnificent sum of �5,000.
Gerard, originally from N Ireland, moved to Canada in 1979 where he supports the Canadian Red Cross. He raised the cash in just two weeks by launching a public appeal and by personally donating 25c for every drink sold in his bar during that period.
Gerard said he wanted to help the Red Cross because he 'felt so helpless".
He knew of the Red Cross role in providing the emergency response in the aftermath of the Omagh bombing and its long-term work with those who were injured and their families.
Norman McKinley, Director of the Red Cross in Northern Ireland, said the money raised would be put to good use by helping fund their major incident training programme and by purchasing equipment from their medical loan service.
Although the Red Cross is best known for delivering international humanitarian relief it works locally to improve heath and prevent disease and providing practical care and support services for the elderly, disabled and other vulnerable groups.
