CELTIC SPONSOR A 'NICE' DAY OUT FOR OMAGH
Celtic sponsor a 'NICE' day out for Omagh
CHILDREN from Omagh, Buncrana and Co. Monaghan enjoyed a special day out, sponsored by Celtic Charity Fund and organised by Northern Ireland Children's Events.
Celtic Charity Fund, the charitable arm of Celtic Football Club, sponsored the giant sized children's party in the Showgrounds where 550 children from Omagh were joined by 100 children from Buncrana and 100 more from Ballybay, to enjoy a day to remember. Throughout the day, various games and social activities took place, with music and special guests also arranged. Among those who attended was Secretary of State, Mo Mowlam.
In August, Celtic sponsored "The Children's Big Day Out" in Portrush, again organised by NICE, and attended by 1,200 children. Following the tragic bombing in Omagh on 15th August, children from the Omagh, Buncrana and Ballybay areas were unable to attend this event.
Brian Mitchell, Chairman of NICE comments, "Following the bombing in Omagh, the children in the Omagh area felt they could not attend the Big Day Out in Portrush. In effect, they were robbed of their Big Day Out. But we are delighted that Celtic has been able to sponsor this event and assist again in achieving our aims. NICE'S main aims are to areas, and to help to close the gaps between differing communities. By bringing children together they can learn trust, respect, appreciate each other's company and at the same time understand "no another's culture and heritage without fear of bigotry, hatred or biased remarks. Although I feel the situation is improving, recent events show the need to work hard to establish an understanding and harmony between the different cultures in Ireland. It is great, after all that has gone on, that the children from the Omagh area are also able to enjoy their Big Day Out. We are most grateful again to Celtic for their continued support. Without it, none of this would be possible."
