Service marks sixth anniversary of bomb
THE sixth anniversary of the Omagh bombing was marked by a low key ecumenical ceremony last Sunday.
The ceremony, which was held in the Memorial Garden on the Dublin Road, was arranged by the relatives of the 31 people who died in what was the worst terrorist atrocity in the history of the troubles.
Omagh District Council decided to discontinue the annual memorial services that they had staged for five years following the bombing, last year, the next official service will be held in 2008 to mark the 10th anniversary.
Michael Gallagher, whose son Adrian was among the victims, said, "We are grateful the five previous anniversaries were marked in the way they were but we believe we ourselves had to do something and this is the time to do it."
The service was attended by a friend of Rocio Abad Ramos, the 23-year-old youth leader from Spain who was killed in the bomb. Also in attendance was Ed Guiney, the producer of a Channel 4 drama about the bombing. The government representatives were Irish Transport Minister Seamus Brennan and NIO official David Watkins.
