O'Loan to attend Omagh DPP
THE Police Ombudsman for NI, Nuala O'Loan, right, is in Omagh next week to address the next public meeting of the Omagh District Policing Partnership.
Ms O'Loan is expected to talk on her work of the past three years but whether she will discuss the controversy over the Omagh bomb investigation by the then police chief, Ronnie Flanagan, is unclear.
This will be the sixth DPP meeting in public and it will be held at the Tara Centre, on Wednesday. Mrs O'Loan has been invited to "give a briefing on the role her office plays in dealing with police complaints and to provide an overview of complaints against the police in Northern Ireland since her office opened more than three years ago".
The meeting will include a review by the District Commander, Superintendent Michael Skuce, of police performance in the District for the past 12 months in achieving the objectives as set out in the Northern Ireland Policing Plan and the local District Policing Plan for 2003-2004.
Following the review of policing performance for last year, the evening will conclude with the launch of the 2004-2005 Omagh District Policing Plan that has been developed in consultation with the local DPP and other community representatives.
Cllr Gerry O'Doherty, Omagh DPP chairman, reflected on the first year.
"Since its formation in March 2003, the Omagh DPP has worked hard to consult with, listen to and understand the concerns local people have about crime and policing issues through the use of a household survey, at meetings in public and in discussions with community groups." he stated.
"We have tried to reflect those concerns when monitoring the work of the local police, and have expressed the views of the local community to the District Commander. We have also identified local policing priorities for the 2004 - 2005 plan, that focus on, and tackle, community problems." Councillor O'Doherty added.
He concluded by saying that he hoped local people from across the district would take the opportunity to participate in shaping and improving local policing by attending the meeting in public next week at the Tara Centre and submit written questions to the DPP.
