Murphy in suspected heart attack alert
Omagh bomb convict under police guard in hospital
COLM Murphy, the only person convicted in connection with the Omagh bombing, was rushed to hospital with a suspected heart attack last week.
Murphy, who is in the second year of a 14-year prison sentence for lending his mobile phone to the perpetrators of the atrocity, was rushed from Portlaoise Prison after collapsing in the early hours of Thursday morning last.
GARDA ESCORT
Prison warders were alerted to his condition by other inmates who raised the alarm. He was taken, under Garda escort, to Portlaoise General Hospital where his condition was being monitored.
Murphy was one of five men named in a recent documentary about the bombing of Omagh and it is understood he is one of those being sued, in a civil case, by the families of some of the victims, who allege he is implicated in the bombing of Omagh.
A recently published book which reported that Murphy had been surprisingly frank with Gardai investigators, led to a falling out with members of the Continuity IRA also serving in Portlaoise.
There were a series of relatively minor incidents within the prison in which Murphy was allegedly implicated.
However, the relationship between himself and the CIRA leadership is thought to have collapsed completely when he urged them to end their campaign.
