CHAIRMAN CONVEYS OMAGHS SOLIDARITY TO MADRID

Chairman conveys Omagh's solidarity and hope to Madrid

ON his return from Spain at the weekend, Omagh District Council chairman Allan Rainey spoke of his visit to Madrid in the aftermath of the bombings. He was very moved by what he saw and he commented on the memories of Omagh which were evoked.
"The pain and heartache were the same as in Omagh, said Cllr Rainey, "with messages of sympathy and flowers from all over the world."
He had wished to express in person the sympathy and solidarity of the people of Omagh and, together with British Ambassador to Spain Stephen Wright, he met with Senora Esperanza Aguirre, President of the Autonomous Community of Madrid.
Cllr Rainey conveyed messages of sympathy to her, along with support for the devastated community of Madrid.
He also laid flowers at Atocha railway station, the scene of the bombing.
Senora Esperanza expressed her gratitude for the visit by Cllr Rainey and said the people of Madrid were touched by Omagh's concern, and encouraged by the presence of the council chairman at the scene of the atrocity.
"It is very reassuring that Omagh has recovered so well from the devastation of the bombing there in 1998 and it gives us great hope and encouragement to face the future and our recovery," Senora Aguirre added.
