Omagh basks in reign of Spain
SUMMER has officially begun for Omagh with the arrival of the long-awaited Spanish delegation of 120 athletes and coaches for the 2003 World Special Olympics.
Only days after the Flame of Hope Special Olympics torch was carried into town on Saturday by police officers from around the world - joined for the final leg to the Omagh Leisure Centre by local schoolchildren - the fiesta has begun in earnest with an earlier than normal Mid-Summer Carnival.
Five years after three young Spanish visitors were killed tragically in the 1998 bomb atrocity, the community is delighted to forge a new and happier bond with Spain through its special visitors. The delegation members have been taken quickly to the heart of all who have met them so far in their brief visit. A packed schedule of activities, including a full civic reception, has been organised for the Special athletes, interrupted by their pre-Games training, of course.
