YEAR IN REVIEW JANUARY

January

Colm Murphy, 49, from Dundalk is convicted for his part in the Omagh Bombing. The Dublin court, in which three judges presided with no jury, find Murphy guilty of causing the explosion and he receives a term of life imprisonment.

Fatal flaws in the RUC investigation into the Omagh bombing were ignored at the highest echelons of the force, a UTV insight progragmme confirms. It establishes that an internal police report provides evidence that the inquiry had serious deficiencies from the outset. These were ignored at both ground level and by the most senior officers.
