DIED IN HOSPITAL THREE WEEKS AFTER BOMB
Died in hospital three weeks after the bombing
FATHER-of-four, Sean McGrath died in a Belfast hospital three weeks after the explosion despite desperate medical attempts to keep him alive.
The marketing consultant, who had been born in Market Street, suffered severe injuries when the 500lb car bomb exploded just yards from where he stood.
Following initial treatment at Tyrone County Hospital, he had been flown later on the Saturday evening to a specialist unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital.
Casualty Sister at the Royal, Helen Patterson said he was taken immediately to the hospital's resuscitation unit before being placed in an incubator.
Death was due to a combination of injuries including damage to his lung, kidney and brain.
The Inquest also heard that Mr McGrath had remained unconscious from the time of the explosion and that all of his injuries had attributed to his death, the most serious being the damage to his lungs which had left him virtually airless.
Mr McGrath had been kept alive by medics in the intensive care unit, in the hopes that he would make a recovery.
Coroner John Leckey said, however, that the patient's prognosis from the outset would have been viewed as being 'fairly bleak.'
