COUNCIL CHAIRMAN CALLS FOR PUBLIC TO SUPPORT FAMILIES
Council chairman calls for public to support families
SPEAKING before the opening of the Inquests, Omagh District Council Chairman, Liam McQuaid said the attention of the world's media would again refocus on the town.
"This will undoubtedly be a very difficult time for the families and we, the people of the Omagh District, must individually and collectively offer them all the help and support that we can during this testing time. We must also continue to support them, and all who continue to be distressed, into the future," he said.
He said he was pleased that the Council was able to facilitate the holding of the inquest at the Leisure Complex.
"While I acknowledge the painful memories that this building holds for the bereaved, I think we are all agreed on the importance of the inquest being contained in Omagh and that being the case, the Minor Hall was the only venue suitable from a logistics point of view."
He added that having viewed the facilities at the Complex for himself he was confident that the right decision was made.
He commended the Churches Forum on its initiative of starting each day with a series of morning reflections.
"I trust that it will bring some comfort to the bereaved and provide them with the inner strength that will be necessary to sustain them over the next painful and difficult few weeks."
Concluding he said "Our thoughts and prayers will be with them."
