Garden of remembrance moving to temporary home
THE Garden of Remembrance erected in memory of those who died in the Market Street bomb atrocity is to be temporarily moved to a new location prior to next month's second anniversary of the tragedy.
A short service and wreath-laying ceremony will take place at the new memorial site in the grounds of the County Hall, close to the war memorial on Drumragh Avenue, at 3.10pm on Tuesday, August 15.
Members of Omagh Church Forum will conduct the service which will be attended by relatives of those who died from Omagh and its outlying areas, Buncrana and Madrid.
A number of other church services marking the anniversary are also to be broadcast on radio and television nationwide.
A spokesperson for Omagh District Council confirmed that demolition work at the Market Street / Drumragh Avenue corner was due to begin within the next week.
Due to the demolition work, the Garden of Remembrance would be temporarily re-sited.
When the current Garden of Remembrance closes, the new garden will be immediately in place, the spokesperson added.
It is estimated that the rebuilding of Lower Market Street - including the Community House development will take around 10 months to complete.
