COUNCIL PAYS TRIBUTE TO WORK OF ST JOHNS AMBULANCE
Council pays tribute to work of St John's Ambulance
The Chairman of Omagh District Council Allan Rainey this week paid tribute to the work of St. John's Ambulance for their many years of service to the public.
The Order of St John is celebrating 900 years of service to humanity in the year 2000, and the occasion was marked in Omagh by the hosting of a small reception for members of the local Brigade.
A particularly warm welcome was extended to Stuart Latham, one of the personnel from Ambulance Headquarters in London, who is on a flying visit to the Brigade's Western Area.
Speaking in his address Mr Rainey said "St John's Ambulance staff have given great assistance for many years at public events, rallies and sporting occasions and have served the Omagh District faithfully since the formation of the most recent adult section in 1982.
"Never was that assistance more necessary than on the 15th August 1998 when a terrorist atrocity ripped our town apart and stretched the resources of medical personnel to the limits. The contribution of the order on that fateful day was incalculable and the debt of gratitude, which we, as a town, owe the members of the brigade and their fellow voluntary orders, the Order of Malta and the British Red Cross, is immense," he added.
He went on to say that the St John's motto 'For the Service of Mankind' was certainly borne out in the best of traditions of the order on that fateful day. He paid tribute to the dedication and compassion shown by the order, saying "The fact that your work is all voluntary, is to your credit and speaks volumes for the calibre of your membership."
He congratulated the order, on behalf of all the people of Omagh District, on the celebration of its Nonacentenary and wished them well for the future.
