GIVE A DAY TO OMAGH CAMPAIGN ORGANISERS PRAISED
Give a Day to Omagh' campaign organisers praised
THE organisers of the 'Give a Day to Omagh Campaign' were finally rewarded with recognition for their hard work when they were presented with a National Award by the Chairman of the UK Association of Town Centre Management, Alan Tallentire.
The campaign was organised in the aftermath the Omagh bomb in 1998 and set up to encourage people to visit the town and meet people here.
It was aimed at providing a morale boost, and to get people back on the streets at what was a very difficult time and also had positive economic and trade spin offs.
UTV chat-show personality Gerry Kelly who played a prominent role in helping project the PR arid marketing efforts of'the campaign attended the ceremony and received a special award from Patrick Bogues of Omagh Business Forum, who thanked him for his contribution.
Reflecting on the success of the event, Mr Kelly said: "We witnessed the events of August 1998 and wondered what we could do to help. This seemed the most appropriate thing at the time and I am very glad to have helped in whatever way I could."
After paying tribute to all those who supported the campaign Mr Bogues referred to "the important work which must be done by this generation to further the development of the town centre and to leave something tangible and strong for future generations."
Allan Rainey, Chairman of Omagh District Council, congratulated all those involved in the initiative and on the receiving of the award.
"I am extremely proud that the Association of Town Centre Management has recognised the hard work of the traders, who, in the face of such adversity, so magnificently rose to the challenge and breathed new life into the commercial centre of the town."
Allan Tallentire of ATCM said on presenting the award that the National Awards Committee were very impressed by the partnership and community spirit displayed by Omagh and that this was the key-reason why they had decided to honour the campaign.
After the presentation Mr Tallentire was taken on a tour of the town by Town Centre Manager, Shane Campbell, and he also attended a number of meetings to discuss a range of issues and ideas of interest to Omagh.
