REVIEW '99' SEPTEMBER
SEPTEMBER
September saw a wave of 'Corrs' mania sweep Omagh as 30,000 ecstatic fans packed the town's Showgrounds for the launch of the UK's Millennium festivities.
Incessant rain failed to dampen enthusiasm as the chart toppers headlined a star studded show to kick start the 2000 celebrations.
The dynamic open aired concert also featured local entertainers Dominic Kerwin, Tom Sweeney and Arty McGlynn.
Lord Mayors and dignitaries from 22 cities and the Millennium minister from Bail Eireann, Mr Seamus Breenan, were entertained by Omagh District Council, and in Omagh Showgrounds a message from Prime Minister Tony Blair was delivered by Mo Molam. "Your commitment to peace is the best possible legacy you could give to both present and future generations," he said.
Mo Mowlam helped local school-children light a special Millennium Beacon from which torches were carried to towns and cities throughout
Britain.
The Corrs took to the stage to a deafening roar and launching into "only when I sleep", the Dundalk based group had a sea of thousands effaces bouncing.
The band finished their 70 minute programme with an encore of their hit single "So Young".
During the evening members of the Northern Ireland Millennium Youth Council declared their pledge for the year 2000 - a pledge for hope and happiness for new generations in Northern Ireland and throughout the world, saying "it is time to let the world know that we are here, not through the echo of the bullet and the bomb, but through the vibrant sounds of our laughter and joy."
