Omagh bomb plans for first anniversary
A SERIES of events to commemorate those who died in the Omagh bomb are being planned to mark the anniversary of the tragedy, Omagh District Council disclosed this week.
The Council's Chief Executive, John McKinney said that arrangements for the events are well in hand.
He said that the anniversary weekend would include commemoration events in both Buncrana and Omagh. The Buncrana event, will take place on Saturday 14th August the Omagh event will take place the following day.
"We are mindful that this tragedy devastated the lives of many people in the town of Omagh and beyond. It also touched the hearts of thousands of other in communities near and far and indeed, on the Saturday one week after the bomb when 40,000 people reclaimed the town of Omagh for the people of Omagh, thousands more attended solidarity events throughout other towns and villages.
"Since last August we have been deeply moved and greatly comforted by the generosity and support which has been shown towards the victims of the Omagh bomb. This has included financial donations to the Omagh Fund as well as countless offers of help and practical support."
The Chief Executive said that many people, who had contributed to the recovery of Omagh, had expressed a desire to come to the town for the first anniversary; "They are very welcome" he said.
Concluding, Mr McKinney advised that an inter-agency group had been established to plan the arrangements for the first anniversary, the group includes Omagh Churches Forum, Omagh Self Help Group, Omagh District Council, Sperrin Lakeland trust, the Western Education and Library Board and FOCUS. Further details of the first anniversary weekend will be available within the next few weeks.
