Peace trophy event for Omagh
OMAGH is to be the venue this Saturday for the first ever cross-border intercommunity sports challenge - in a prestigious project aimed at bridging the divide through sport.
The choice of Omagh as a venue will be recognised as symbolic of community togetherness in the aftermath of the tragic August bombing.
Organised by Community Games it will see children from 12 counties, north and south of the border, competing for a prestigious Peace Trophy, sponsored by Nobel Laureate John Hume.
Speaking at a recent Community Games meeting in Derry, Mr Hume was fulsome in his praise for the outstanding work carried out by the movement and promised to support their endeavours to encourage peace through sport.
Saturday's cross-border spectacular in the Omagh Leisure Centre had been organised by Community Games Northern Ireland teams of Development Officers to celebrate the huge increase in participation by young people, both within Northern Ireland and in the six border counties.
CHILDREN
Over two hundred children together with managers, coaches and supporters are expected to converge in Omagh to take part in a "pentathlon" of events which include Indoor Soccer, Olympic Handball, Rugby, Basketball and a special team challenge. Children from each of the 12 counties and representing both communities will get the chance to pitch in and play together as a team. The overall winning team will qualify for the Community Games Special Activities weekend in Mosney Holiday Centre in May where friendship made can be continued keen to point out that the activities on show in Omagh are merely a showcase of the 35 sports and cultural activities which are currently on its annual programme.
This is the second year of a two year Peace and Reconciliation Funded programme by Community Games in the North which has already seen a 40 per cent increase in the intercommunity games.
The activities start from 10.00am and the winners of this year's Peace Trophy should be known around 5.00pm
The format of the competition means that the winning team will be drawn from several counties therefore the prize will have to be shared throughout the year.
