BYRNE URGES SPEEDY RECONSTRUCTION
Byrne urges speedy reconstruction
The continued closure of the bottom of the town is contributing to a feeling of uneasiness and depression according to Assemblyman, Joe Byrne, who, this week called on the relevant authorities to get the rebuilding started as soon as possible.
"The people of Omagh want to see the rebuilding of Market Street" he said.
Continuing, he stressed that the restoration and reopening of the area would greatly add to the sense of recovery and make people feel more hopeful about the future of our town. "The sooner traffic is allowed to travel up Market Street the better for the shopkeepers and shoppers alike in the whole Market Street area."
He urged a speedy and effective co-operation between the various agencies and said it was important to get agreement on what buildings are to be demolished and to get on with the programme of rebuilding.
"It is very important that, before the onset of the Christmas shopping period, all sections of the town have normal traffic arrangements in operation. Therefore, it is vital that all demolition is carried out as quickly as possible and that the actual rebuilding commences" he said.
Concluding, he urged the Northern Ireland Office and the appropriate' planning personnel to ensure that local professional building services and firms are not ignored in favour of larger Belfast based firms when it comes to awarding contracts for reconstruction. "It would be very annoying if local architects, quantity surveyors or engineering firms were to be snubbed."
