DEMOLITION WORK TO BEGIN AT MARKET STREET

Demolition work to begin at Market Street

DEMOLITION teams are expected to move in today or tomorrow to clear the bombed site of the Town's Market Street.
Contracts have been agreed between individual property owners and the Compensation agency for the buildings to come down.
It is understood that once the works are started the demolition scheme should be completed within a week.
The badly damaged premises in the location of McElroy's Shoe shop will be demolished first, before the demolition teams moves to the other side of the street. It is understood that contracts for rebuilding the wide range of properties in that area will then go out to tender.
At least eight buildings will have to be demolished in the area surrounding the bomb site.
A safety assessment was carried out which identified what buildings on both sides would have to come down.
Established then was the need for a balance between the sensitivity of the situation and need to help the area reach a better future.
