ASSEMBLY MEMBERS MEET SENIOR STAFF OF LAKELAND TRUST
Assembly members meet senior staff of Lakeland Trust
NORTHERN Assembly members for West Tyrone this week met with the Sperrin Lakeland Trust Senior Management Team.
The meeting was held to share with the three assemblymen, Barry McElduff, Joe Byrne and Oliver Gibson, the health and social care issues that
are being faced by the Trust.
Presentations were made to the three assembly members on Mental Health, Elderly Services, Community Care, Acute Services and future organisational change issues.
Trust Chief Executive, Hugh Mills, gave an overview of the organisational structure of the Trust and the strategic issues that it faces.
Health and Social Care will be one of the most important portfolios of the New Assembly but it has been described as "the poison chalice" because of the tough issues it entails.
However, it is one portfolio that locally is regarded as a challenge and there is avid public interest about the role of the new assembly with regards to health, and the make up of the Health Committee.
West Tyrone assemblyman, Barry McElduff. said he found the meeting "extremely informative", adding that there had been a wide exchange at the meeting on all aspects of the delivery of health services locally.
"It was a useful opportunity to put our concerns to the Trust and to obtain information about the health service. It also served to consolidate useful contacts."
At the meeting Oliver Gibson congratulated the Trust on its performance following the Omagh bombing.
He said it was as a direct result of the intervention of the Trust staff that more lives were not lost.
Joe Byrne welcomed the opportunity to discuss health and social care with the Trust, and possible new arrangements for the provision of Health and Personal Social Services (HPSS).
The new assembly, he said offered an opportunity for local representatives to influence how services may be delivered in the future.
"Meetings such as this allow members to comment on issues in an informed way and strengthen the arguments put forward by the area's representatives."
Both parties agreed to meet again in six months time to revisit the issues discussed.
The Senior Management Team consisted of Eugene Fee, Director of Acute Services, David Bolton, Director of Community Care, Gabriel Carey, Director of Mental Health and Elderly Services, Peter Garrett, Chairman of Medical Staff at the County and Vincent Ryan, Director of Planning, Contracting and Information.
