Plan for Redevelopment of Market Street is unveiled
PLANS are afoot to begin the redevelopment of the Market Street area following its destruction in the bomb on August 15th.
The Chief Executive of the Council, John McKinney has held discussions with local traders and they have agreed to demolish the buildings worst affected.
A further meeting is planned for later today when the Chief Executive will display one possible plan for the way in which things could be rebuilt. The Council have drawn up plans which allow for the development of a square at the end of Market Street.
Referring to the plans drawn up as something more of a suggestion or a vision of the type of thing that could be developed, Mr McKinney, told a specially convened Council meeting that the plans were simply an impression of what the redevelopment could look like.
It was suggested that any redevelopment of Market Street should be tied in with plans for a riverside walk.
The Chief Executive also affirmed that he had sought European funding to cover loss of earnings by the business affected and said that he would be asking the government to match any Euro-funding.
Ultimately, the decision as to the way in which Market Street will be redeveloped will rest with the landowners and the Council will be working with them to ensure the reconstruction of the area as soon as possible.
It is also proposed that, following the demolition of damaged buildings, that a series of temporary buildings could be erected from which businesses could operate.
Councillor Paddy McGowan suggested that the bottom of the street be reopened to single lane traffic, and Councillor Mackey enquired if the Council was in a position to proceed with the Riverside development.
Councillor Seamus Shields, suggested that if the bottom of Market Street was going to be redeveloped, planners should consider the redevelopment of the whole town.
The Secretary of State, Mo Mowlam will visit the town on October 5th and will be appraised of the outcome of discussions between Council and the traders will be shown the document, 'Omagh Renewal and Beyond', which has environmental, physical, and commercial perspectives.
