Memorial piper hailed
LOCAL bag-piper, Drew McDermot, who played a musical tribute to the victims of the Omagh bombing at the unveiling of the permanent monument in Omagh's Market Street, on Friday of last week, said he was overwhelmed by the reaction to the tribute.
"People have been coming up to me on the street and saying how much they enjoyed it others who saw it on TV have been ringing me. It was a great privilege to be selected by Omagh District Council to play on the occasion and, I would thank them for giving me the opportunity, and the television crew who treated me with such respect and gave me so much help."
Mr McDermot, a former foreman in the Tyrone Constitution, said he was particularly delighted with the response of his three and three quarters year-old grand-daughter, Leah, who lives at Cullion, Lisaharney, who rang him in a very excited state.
"It was her first ever telephone call to me to say she had seen me on television, and she was so exited. I was delighted with the response." He said he was very grateful to everyone who contacted him with messages of good will.
