The Omagh Bombing - 10th Anniversary Arrangements Friday 15 August 2008
Public Commemorative Ceremony
The 10th Anniversary Commemorative Ceremony and dedication of the 'Garden of Light' Memorial will be held adjacent to the Memorial Garden on Drumragh Avenue at 3.00 pm on Friday 15th August 2008.
Anyone planning to attend is asked to gather in Drumragh Avenue car park or at Drumragh Avenue and to be in place by 2.45 pm. Large screens will be visible from Drumragh Avenue car park. Orders of Service will be available for distribution at a number of points around the town centre area.
There will be a moment's silence at 3.10 pm and the ceremony will include an address by former hostage and church envoy, Terry Waite CBE. The ceremony will end at around 3.40 pm. Street Closures
Drumragh Avenue will be closed to through traffic from 9.30 am on Friday morning. Lower Market Street will be closed for the duration of the ceremony.
Drumragh Avenue car park will be closed on Friday 15 August 2008.
Floral Tributes
Any member of the public wishing to lay floral tributes is asked to do so at the Memorial Garden at Drumragh Avenue which will be open to the public following the public ceremony. Following the opening of the Memorial Garden, any floral tributes left at the Market Street site will be removed and placed in the Memorial Garden. All flowers will be removed one week after the anniversary and mulched.
Parking Arrangements
Car parking will not be available in Drumragh
Avenue car park. The following car parks will
be available in addition to the normal town
centre car parks for those attending the public
ceremony:
o Omagh Academy, Dublin Road
o First Omagh Presbyterian Church, Dublin Road
o Sacred Heart College, Kevlin Road
o Omagh High School/Campsie Playing Fields
o St Joseph's Hall
o Omagh County Primary School, Campsie
o St Colmcille's Primary School, Brook Street
o Brook Street Chapel car park
o Lidl, Dromore Road
Car parking for the disabled will be available at the WELB Technology Centre. Those people living within walking distance are asked to travel by foot.
Council Facilities
As a mark of respect Omagh District Council's Civic Offices will be closed from 2.30 pm -4.00 pm. All other facilities will remain open.
Exhibitions - 11-22 August 2008
Petals of Hope: Rays of Light Exhibition - a tribute to the victims of the Omagh bomb has returned to Omagh and will be hosted in the Gallery, Strule Arts Centre from 11-22 August 2008. The exhibition features high quality copies of art pieces created from the many floral tributes left in Omagh following the bomb of 15 August 1998. The original art pieces were donated to each of the bereaved families and three large pieces hang in Omagh, Buncrana and Madrid. A selection of books of condolence and messages of sympathy from the Omagh Library Archive will also be displayed.
Opening hours: Monday - Saturday: 10.00 am - 5.45 pm.
Omagh Bomb Memorial Exhibition - a display of materials illustrating the concepts and thinking behind the design of the 'Garden of Light' memorial; the technology involved, and a photographic illustration of the design and construction process. The exhibition will be hosted in the Foyer, Omagh Community House from 11-22 August 2008. This will be accompanied by the 'My Omagh' art piece - an initiative conceived by Her Grace, the Duchess o1 Abercorn and involving young people from Omagh who have come together with textile artist, Teresa Poyntz, to create an art piece illustrating their thoughts on how Omagh has progressed in the ten years since the Omagh bomb.
