Omagh bomb probe calls in US forensics

US forensic scientists who worked on the September 11 attacks are carrying out DNA tests on material recovered from the Omagh bomb, it has emerged.
The latest move has been instigated in a bid to help trace those responsible for the Market Street atrocity of four years ago.
Samples taken from the scene of the explosion will be carefully examined by a team of forensic scientists who have been piecing together evidence recovered from the World Trade Centre attack in New York last year.
In the days which followed the Omagh bombing, a number of skips packed with debris were sifted through in an effort to piece together the explosive device used. Other items, including the bombers' Vauxhall Cavalier car, were also examined by a team of detectives assigned to the case.
The material sent to the US will undergo a series of DNA tests in a bid to bring those responsible to justice.
Although the PSNI has refused to identify the evidence sent to the post-September 11 team, police officers here are hopeful of a positive result from the operation. Tests are not expected to be completed for a number of months.
A source close to the case has been quoted as stating that officers are optimistic that DNA extracted from the samples will identify those responsible for the carnage.
The security source said: "This is very significant. We are very hopeful these new techniques will finally see someone charged with the murders of the 29 people and unborn twins in Omagh.
"The evidence being studied is very important and we believe it contains a number of clues which will link those we suspect of carrying out the attack and the bombing."
