FAMILIAR SIGHT IN OMAGH SKYLINE IS NOW GONE
Familiar sight in Omagh skyline is now gone
THE large crane that dominated the skyline of Omagh for the past eight months was dismantled last week.
The huge metal frame, which was erected by the contractors working on the Community House, McCann Bros of Fintona, was taken down because work on the building is nearing completion.
Work on the new Community House began in January and because of the restricted site and the need to allow traffic to flow, the contractors were somewhat curtailed.
The 33 ft crane, which is owned by McCann Bros, was shipped in and the tower/stem placed in the lift shaft of the building. The head/jib was then placed on the top.
Over the passing months, particularly as the Community House was near completion, many local people wondered how the crane would be taken away.
Last Thursday night, a team of men moved in around 9 pm and broke the crane down into four sections. It was then lifted onto a lorry by another mobile crane and taken to its new destination at a hotel in Letterkenny. It takes four 40ft lorries to take it away.
