MEMORIAL SERVICE MARKS 4TH ANNIVERSARY OF BOMB
Memorial service marks 4th anniversary of bomb
TODAY'S ceremony to mark the fourth anniversary of the Omagh bomb will allow the community an opportunity to remember and at the same time move forward together, a local cleric has said.
The area around the Memorial Garden at Drumragh Avenue will be closed off to traffic for the lunchtime service to remember those who lost their lives in the August 15,1998 explosion nearby.
The ceremony, which has been organised by the district council, Omagh Churches Forum and Sperrin Lake land Trust, will commence at lpm. A number of shops and offices are expected to close for the short service.
Omagh Churches Forum member, Fr Kevin Mullan, who has helped organise this year's event, said it was important to the families of the
victims that the town still remembers.
"This is the one day in the year when we still remember what happened here four years ago," Fr Mullan said. "We have to say to those affected that we recognise all that they have gone through as a result of the bombing.
"Many are still struggling and we can only hope that they can release from the past and move on to face the future with hope and courage."
During the ceremony, Council Chief Executive Danny McSorley will lay a wreath on behalf of the people of Omagh. Families of the Buncrana victims will travel to take part and the service will contain a Spanish element in memory of the two young victims from Madrid.
Annual organised ceremonies will take place up until next year, the fifth anniversary of the atrocity.
