Omagh mole goes into hiding
THE former British undercover agent Kevin Fulton has gone into hiding somewhere in Northern Ireland this week, claiming police are refusing to take him into protective custody.
Fulton, whose allegations led in part to the Police Ombudsman's report into the Omagh bomb investigation, walked into Newry's Ardmore police station late on Thursday night last week saying he had been followed and his life was in imminent danger.
However, after spending the night in an interview room, he fled the police station and sought sanctuary elsewhere, claiming the PSNI refused his demands to be taken into protective custody.
A "source" close to him was quoted in daily newspapers saying his life was at risk again because the PSNI was not placing him in protective custody.
The source said the PSNI did offer to put Fulton into B&B accommodation but he rejected it, claiming it would only endanger the lives of any other occupants using the premises.
Police recently warned Fulton his life is under threat from dissident republican elements, "not unknown to him".
SAFE LOCATIONS
Since then he has spent his time in hiding at a series of safe locations.
The quoted sources said it was clear that the PSNI were caught on the hop by Fulton's sudden appearance in Newry, and did not know what to do with him.
"The PSNI in Newry obviously did not know what to do, and Kevin's presence there caused them problems.
"However, they put him into an interview room and gave him a mattress to sleep on while they worked out what to do with him," said the source.
"Kevin said the police in Newry were decent enough to him during his time in Ardmore station.
"They brought him coffee but he had to get food brought into him by friends."
The source went on to say that the PSNI offered to put Fulton into B&B accommodation, but he would have to pay for it himself.
Fulton, who has no money and cannot sign on for social security benefit, is understood to have rejected the offer. He also claimed his presence in such accommodation would only endanger the lives of other occupants, and has rejected a further offer of B&B accommodation provided by social services.
A PSNI spokesman said: "We do not comment on security matters and no inference should be taken from our refusal to do so."
