Massive festival of music could mark 4th anniversary of tragedy

OMAGH could be staging a massive festival of music possibly over a weekend to mark the fourth anniversary of the deaths of 31 people in the Omagh bombing.
Relatives of the victims have been in touch with a number of people from within the music and entertainment business in the hope of getting just such a project off the ground. The purpose of the festival would be two fold, to raise monies for the civil case being taken against those suspected of the bombing, and to give the Omagh area a much needed boost.
U2, Westlife, Ash and a number of American groups have been approached and asked to participate in what is envisaged as a weekend of music in Omagh.
The move comes just weeks after Bob Geldof gave his backing to the families in the quest for justice for their loved ones. Following the lead by Bob Geldof, a host of other celebrities have now given their backing to the Omagh case including, Phil Coulter, and Samantha Mumba.
Chairman of the Omagh Self Help and Support Group, Michael Gallagher, said he hoped Omagh could accommodate such a concert or series of concerts in August or September this year.
"At a stroke it would pay for the legal costs of our civil action, secondly it would also be a tremendous boost for Omagh and lift the spirits of the townspeople who have come through so much.
Westlife, U2, and Ash have already been contacted and Mr Gallagher now hopes to contact Van Morrison, Brian Kennedy, and a number of others.
Though no venue has been mentioned as yet, Mr Gallagher said that there were a, number of sports grounds in Omagh which could be pressed into action if needed.
Michael said that whilst the families were the driving force behind the idea, that they may not have the skills to organise an event on this scale.
"We've flagged it up it would be a great boost to Omagh on the 4th anniversary of the bombing."
Donations have been flooding into the civil case fund for the past two weeks. Donations can be made at the Bank of Ireland, Campsie Road Omagh, sort code 905002 a/c number: 30790971
