Byrne welcomes discussion of Ombudsman's report
Police Board member, Joe Byrne has said the decision by the Board to hold a series of meetings in January with all parties affected by the Ombudsman's report demonstrates the Board is determined to act quickly and take a firm and robust approach to the report's implications.
In a brief statement issued on Monday, Mr Byrne said that the Policing Board had been very mindful of the pain and trauma still felt as a result of the Omagh bomb. "The people of Omagh and the wider Northern Ireland community need to be reassured that lessons have been learned by the Police Service and that all necessary procedures will be put in place which will improve the overall effectiveness of the Police Service," he said.
He went on to describe the bombing of Omagh as an "evil act of terrorism planned and executed by dissident republicans in an attempt to derail the peace process."
