Police, Special Branch need proper code of conduct, says Joe Byrne MLA
WEST Tyrone Assemblyman Joe Byrne has stated this week that the Policing Board of which he is a member is determined to find out what happened in Omagh in August 1998.
"This may include recommendations to the senior management of the Police Service to ensure that there is a fully integrated police service so that all sections of the service including Special Branch, are operating under a proper and accountable code of conduct."
He said that at the Policing Board meeting there was an initial discussion on the Police Ombudsman's report into the controversies surrounding police handling of the Omagh bomb.
"The Board are taking these matters seriously, acting quickly and have decided to hold a special meeting in early January to address, comprehensively the implications of the Ombudsman's report."
He added that that appropriate arrangements will be made to get a submission from the chief constable, the ombudsman and to receive a deputation from the Omagh Victims' Support Group.
"The Board", said Mr Byrne, "are determined to move quickly and address the issues regarding the whole police handling of the Omagh bomb, both before and after and in terms of police intelligence and post bomb investigation."
He continued, "It is vitally important to the people of Omagh and the wider Northern Ireland community know that the Policing Board are determined to find out what happened in Omagh in august 1998."
He concluded, "The people and the uniformed police themselves want the lessons of the Omagh bomb to be quickly acted upon so that there will be no residual doubt about how police investigations are handled in the future."
The Policing Board condemned the leaking of the report.
