War against terrorism hits home for Real IRA

US SECRETARY of State Colin Powell has extended sanctions on a number of foreign organisations including the Real IRA who were behind the Omagh bombing in 1998 and a list of Islamic terrorist groupings.
The designation leaves it illegal for Americans to provide material support for the organisations and US financial institutions must also block their assets.
Included on the banned list are Osama bin Laden's al Qaida grouping together with Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, Spanish ETA separatists and the FARC organisation in Colombia.
Under US law, the terrorist group list must be updated at two-year intervals. At present, there are 28 named groups on the list which are all subject to sanctions.
In addition to financial sanctions being imposed, representatives of foreign groups designated as terrorists are barred from receiving US visas.
Issuing the ban, the US Secretary said "Every one of these groups has continued to engage in terrorist activity over the past two years."
General Powell added that most of the redesignated groups had carried out "murderous attacks on innocent people" over the past number of years.
