Suspect device causes Omagh security alert
POLICE in Omagh sealed off part of the town centre last night (Wednesday) after a suspect device was found in the Campsie Road area.
The suspect device was near the scene of the 1998 bomb which caused such widespread death and destruction, killing 29 people, two unborn children and injuring hundreds of others.
A spokesman at RUC headquarters in Belfast confirmed that a security alert was begun when the device was spotted about 8 pm.
The army was called in and local homes and business premises were evacuated, while the device was examined by explosives experts.
The RUC spokesman said, "Security forces are dealing with a suspect object which someone found at a car in the Campsie Road area. Army
technical officers have been called to the scene and are dealing with the situation."
The alert caused serious road congestion in the town as traffic was diverted from the scene of the security cordon.
At the time of going to press, the area remained sealed off while a British army helicopter circled overhead.
