Omagh highest violent crime rate
Omagh held the unenviable title of having the highest violent crime rate for Northern Ireland for the year 1998/99.
In statistics released this week by the Northern Ireland Office, recording the geographical distribution of crime on a district council area, Omagh was the highest, followed by Belfast, Derry and Craigavon councils.
In contrast, neigbouring Fermanagh had the lowest level of violent offences for the same year.
The Omagh bomb was the reason why Omagh was projected into the high crime bracket. During 1998/99 violent offences in Omagh were at 20.1 per 1000 of population.
The following year 1999/2000, Omagh had dropped back to its more normal level of violent crime 8.3 per 1000 of the population that year.
The information on crime is contained in the NIO Research and Statistical bulletin entitled 'Patterns of Crime in Northern Ireland and Related Factors 1998/99.
