McKevitt charged with directing paramilitary organisation
A BAIL application by a republican dissident, charged under legislation introduced after the Omagh bombing, has been adjourned until April 24.
Michael McKevitt (51), of Beech Park, Blackrock, Dundalk faced charges of directing a paramilitary organisation when he initially appeared at a special court sitting on Friday night last.
He was charged that between August 29, 1999 and March 28, 2001, of being a member of an unlawful organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, and that between August 29, 1999 and October 23, 2000, that he directed the activities of the same organisation.
The court remanded McKevitt in custody until April 24 when the case will be mentioned again.
Tight security surrounded the Green Street courthouse for Tuesday's brief hearing.
The accused is the first person to be charged with directing a lawful organisation under new legislation drawn up just two weeks after the Omagh bombing of August 1998.
Under the legislation, anyone convicted of directing an unlawful organisation is liable to life imprisonment.
