NEW BOOKLET COULD HELP SCHOOLS HANDLE TRAUMA
New booklet could help schools handle trauma
LAST week schools throughout the North received copies of a new publication entitled 'When Tragedy Strikes', which was put together jointly by the Irish National Teachers' Organisation and the Ulster Teachers Union.
The booklet is designed as a reference resource for teachers faced with critical incident management in schools, and draws on the experiences of children caught-up in the Omagh bombing.
The publishers advise that 'critical incidents' can range from the death of a pupil or a teacher to the impact on a school of a tragedy affecting the whole community, such as the Omagh bomb the event that was a catalyst for the publication.
Avril Callaghan of the UTU commented; "I am delighted that INTO and UTU have been able to provide such a valuable resource. It is in the process of being circulated to every school in Northern Ireland and I would like to place on the record our thanks to the Departments of Education, North and South, for their assistance in its distribution. This is an example of partnership in practice."
She also paid tribute to the input of Elizabeth Capewell, consultant to the committee, who had been involved in dealing with the aftermath of disasters such as those which happened at Hungerford, Lockerbie, Hillsborough, and Omagh.
Frank Bunting of the INTO urged teachers in schools not to simply file the booklet away but to use it. "INTO endorses this document. It will be an important and invaluable resource for teachers in Northern Ireland. It will assist all those in education to effectively manage the difficult area of critical incidents."
