Call for support for Omagh traders
DEAR Sir,
Following the disaster on 15th August we the community, are left feeling helpless. We look at the bomb site and think of how it must have been for all those present on that terrible day. We think of all the families grieving over the loss of their mothers, fathers, brother, sisters etc., we think of the countless physically/psychologically injured, now trying to adjust to major changes in both body and life experience and the adjustments their families have had to make also; then we think about all those people who helped in the street that day, comforting those injured, applying first aid, transporting those injured to hospital and then the emergency services and all the medical and nursing staff who witnessed scenes never meant for human eyes it's all still too painful to recall and we still feel helpless.
But we needn't.
Two months have passed by now and those of us not directly affected by bereavement, injury or first hand experience are trying to get back to normal. We go along to the fund-raising events in an attempt to do a little to help the affected knowing eventually they will benefit somewhat from the overwhelming response to "the fund" (hopefully sooner rather than later!).
In the midst of all this grief, confusion, anger, sorrow there has been a vast area of our community, our town, affected severely by this bomb which will not receive any compensation or help, that is, the local retailers. We are all so aware of how quiet the town has become - day after day, empty shop after empty shop has become the norm. How long more can these businesses survive?
This is where each and every one of us can help the crippled businesses of our town.
Christmas is coming; shopping lists are beginning - forget the shopping trips to neighbouring towns and cities this Christmas.
Whatever you need can be got locally and by doing so we will be assisting in a big way in the rebuilding of our town.
