RED CROSS AWARD FOR PEOPLE OF OMAGH
Red Cross award for people of Omagh
A SPECIAL 'Care in Crisis' award was presented to the people of Omagh last week by the Red Cross, in recognition of the outstanding acts of courage shown following the August 15th bombing.
The presentation - which took place inl Belfast's Duke's Hotel last Friday -acknowledged the strength and compassion shown in the wake of the tragedy.
Tributes were paid to the community who were faced with having to deal with some of the most tragic events in the history of the troubles in the North.
The award was accepted on the town's behalf by councillors Liam McQuaid and Oliver Gibson.
Also present were Dr Peter Garrett and Sister Bridie McMenamin, representing Tyrone County Hospital, and social worker Marion McGale, from Sperrin Lakeland Trust, who were all directly involved in the emergency response during the tragedy.
Sixteen Red Cross volunteers were also awarded Certificates of High Commendation for their tireless work in the aftermath of the bombing.
Among them was the manager of the local Red Cross branch, Mary Brogan, who said the award in asmall way, acknowledged the unsung heroes who helped out at the scene of the blast.
"Everyone in the town was affected in some way, but everyone did what they could to help.
"There were some very gory scenes, but the volunteers did what they could to shelter the children from it all.
"Before this, I feared volunteers might get in the way in an emergency, but although we all knew people who were killed, the volunteers showed their training and acted in a very professional manner" she added.
