OMAGH'S "USE OF G.A.A. GROUNDS" PROPOSAL TO GO TO CROKE PARK
While the installation of a new Chairman was one of the big events of the Convention, another was the handling of the motion from Omagh St. Enda's proposing an extension to the Rule covering "the use of G.A.A. grounds."
The Omagh delegates - Brendan McAleer and Liam McGrath - made the case for the motion that, - "In exceptional circumstances, when it is clear that the purpose is for fund-raising for a charitable cause Central Council may permit the use of G.A.A. grounds for the playing of any game."
There was a very reasoned lengthy debate on a wide range of the implications involved in the proposal. The input from several clubs and County Board officials highlighted the complications and eventually it was agreed - with the consent of the Omagh delegates - that the proposal be transmitted to Croke Park Central Council by Tyrone's representative there, Jimmy Treacy. This ensures a hearing for the proposal at committee level in Croke Park whereas a defeat on a vote on Sunday would have ended it as a live issue on the official G.A.A. agenda.
