PRINCE'S TRUST START UP PERIPATETIC PROGRAMME
Prince's Trust start up peripatetic programme
RESPONDING to the Omagh bombing, the Prince's Trust Volunteers scheme which is delivered by the Western Education and Library Board, last month started up a peripatetic programme at the Focus Centre in Sedan Avenue for fourteen young unemployed people, under the tutelage of team leader Declan McAleer and assistant team leader Conor Martin.
As part of the programme, the group went on a team building residential to the YMCA at Newcastle where they undertook many challenging activities including rock-climbing, canoeing, archery and orienteering.
The team also completed two local community projects. The first was a travelling Christmas Show which was performed in Heatherbank, Cranny,
Omagh Integrated and St.Oliver Plunkett schools, as well as the children's ward at the Tyrone County Hospital .
Their second project was to prepare about 1500 candles for the vigil and carol service in Omagh on December 20. They are also presently arranging fund raising activities in aid of the Omagh Bombing Appeal.
The aim of the programme is to help young people gain skills and experiences in areas such as teamwork, communication, confidence and motivation which will later assist them to gain employment, further education, training or voluntary work. During the programme the participants will work towards three NVQ Keyskills, a City and Guilds profile of achievements and a First Aid certificate.
