Victims of Omagh bomb honoured by Omagh High School
A moving tribute to a former teacher, pupils and former pupil of Omagh High School was held in the school on Saturday afternoon.
A memorial plaque was unveiled by the Duke of Abercorn, who also gave an address and was accompanied by her Grace the Duchess of Abercorn.
The Parents' Association also presented a memorial table, made by former pupil Sam Kennedy.
The role of honour was read by R. Cummings, vice-Principal: Cormac M. J. McCabe, Albert Samuel Ballantine, Christopher Kyle, Richard Malvern Moffitt, John Roxborough, Kenneth Newell, Fred Anthony, Alan Radford, Debra-Anne Cartwright, Howard George Donaghy, Garry Mervyn Ewing, Ronald Roulston Alexander, Ivy Winnifred Kelly (nee Fenton), Cecil James Caldwell, Esther Norah Gibson, Samantha
McFarland and Lorraine Wilson.
The service and dedication was conducted by Rev. Robert Herron and Rev. Robert Clarke, school Governors, and the lessons were read by Lisa Anderson (Head Girl), and Matthew Alcorn (Head Boy).
Drew Hamilton, Association Chairman, welcomed everyone to the service. In his address W. Harper, Headmaster, said he was honoured to be associated with the memorial and paid tribute to the contribution the deceased teacher and pupils made to the life of the school. The school choir led the praise and also sang an anthem entitled "Brother James' Air," they were accompanied by S. Linton, a teacher in the school.
At a luncheon prior to the service, Andrew Scott, former chairman, explained how the Association had been researching the role of honour for several years. The Association realised how gainful and difficult it was for those present, but it was not the intention of the Association to add to the distress already endured. He said it was important to honour and remember those who were so brutally and tragically murdered and trusted this plaque would remain as a fitting memorial to their memory.
