THE achievements of an Omagh surgeon were recognised this week, when he attended the lunch of the century in London's Mansion House on Tuesday.
Dominic Pinto, OBE DLt, who is a Consultant Surgeon with the Tyrone County Hospital in Omagh, was invited to the prestigious Millennium Luncheon, thrown by the Lord Mayor of London, Lord Levene, and attended by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.
The glittering gala was held to mark the achievements and contributions of individuals in the 20th Century.
More than 300 people were invited from the worlds of sport, music, fashion, science, politics, stage and screen. Nobel prizewinners were also in attendance.
Guests included three former Prime Ministers - Baroness Thatcher, Sir Edward Heath and John Major, as well as Sir Bobby Charlton,
comedian Ronnie Barker, singers Shirley Bassey and Dame Vera Lynn and athletes, Sharon Davvies and Tessa Sanderson.
1766 nominations were received by Lord Levene from across Britain and Northern Ireland from councils, lord lieutenants and official bodies. A shortlist was then drawn up of 399 guests.
Mr Pinto, who is the Deputy Lieutenant of Tyrone, told the Herald yesterday he had some idea who nominated him for the luncheon.
He said: "I was very surprised to have received the invitation, and I have a fair idea who nominated me.
"I was delighted to attend the luncheon, which was thrown by the Lord Mayor to finish this year by celebrating the contributions of others
during this century. It was thoroughly enjoyable," he added.
Another guest at the Millennium lunch was Mary O 'Brien, from Omagh.
